Designed and engraved by Jean Combet, this regular postage issue features a detailed biological study of a spotted Grouper (Mérou, belonging to the genus Epinephelus) emerging alertly from a subterranean cave network surrounded by tube corals and branching marine flora. Historically, this issue stems from the definitive natural history series produced when the Comoro Islands were an autonomous overseas territory of France, utilizing rigorous line engraving to catalog the economic and biological assets of the regional reefs. By highlighting this predatory, cave-dwelling fish—a foundational species for both local subsistence fisheries and the preservation of reef health—the territorial administration documented the complex marine ecosystems of the Mozambique Channel, establishing a rich scientific baseline of the archipelago's territorial waters.
