Issued in 1976 as part of the United States Bicentennial (1776-1976) series, this stamp commemorates the Pony Express, one of the most legendary mail services in American history. The design features Richard Egan, a founder of the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company, and Johnny Fry, widely regarded as the first rider of the Pony Express. Scenes of mounted couriers racing across the frontier and a route map between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California, illustrate the service that dramatically reduced mail delivery times across the continent in 1860-1861. By issuing this commemorative stamp, the Federal and Islamic Republic of the Comoros honored an important chapter in the history of communications and transportation in the United States.
