Spearfishing and underwater exploration (Chasse Sous-Marine) held a prominent place in the coastal lifestyle, sports, and tourism identity of the Comoros Archipelago (Archipel des Comores). Surrounded by warm, clear Indian Ocean waters, vibrant coral reefs, and rich marine biodiversity, the islands provided exceptional grounds for freediving, skin diving, and spearfishing, attracting both local enthusiasts and international sport divers during the mid-20th century.
To highlight the island territory's exceptional marine environment and sports activities, the postal administration of the Comoros Archipelago issued a dedicated 70-franc airmail stamp (POSTE AERIENNE). Designed and engraved by Paul Combet (COMBET), the stylized two-tone design features a spearfisherman in red equipped with a diving mask, fins, and a speargun, swimming beneath diverse tropical reef fish in blue-green waters.
