Corbeilles de la Grande-Comore - Baskets
This airmail stamp celebrates the vibrant artisanal heritage of the archipelago, explicitly highlighting the traditional coiled basketry of Grande Comore ("Corbeilles de la Grande-Comore"). The illustration depicts a collection of meticulously woven, lidded baskets adorned with bright red and green geometric patterns, showcasing a centuries-old craft tradition passed down through generations of Comorian women. Made from locally sourced palm fronds and plant fibers, these functional containers are used in daily domestic life for storage and play a significant role in traditional ceremonies, including the exchange of gifts during the culturally foundational Grand Mariage (Great Marriage). Issued under French territorial administration ("RF"), this postal release honors the resilience of Comorian material culture, using an airmail platform to display the technical skill, local identity, and aesthetic grace of native island handicrafts to a global audience.
