R.34 Airship (Great Britain, 1919) and the Southern Belle
This stamp commemorates the British airship R.34, one of the most famous dirigibles of the early aviation era. In 1919, the R.34 achieved international recognition by completing the first return transatlantic flight by an airship, demonstrating the growing potential of long-distance air travel. Alongside the airship appears the Southern Belle, a well-known British railway service associated with luxury passenger transportation during the golden age of rail travel. By featuring these two transportation achievements, the Comoros celebrated the progress of air and rail travel during the twentieth century. The issue emphasizes how technological innovation improved international mobility and contributed to the development of faster and more efficient transportation networks across the world.
