Saïd Omar ben Soumeth (1899–1980)
Saïd Omar ben Soumeth (1899–1980) served as the influential Grand Mufti of the Comoros (Grand Muphti des Comores / السيد عمر بن سميط - المفتي الأكبر لجزر القمر) and was one of the most prominent Islamic jurists and scholars in the Indian Ocean region. Trained in Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) and theology across East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, he played a vital role in unifying religious law, guiding judicial affairs, and fostering Islamic scholarship throughout the archipelago. Issued by the postal administration of the Comoros Archipelago (Archipel des Comores), this 135-franc airmail stamp (POSTE AERIENNE) honors the Grand Mufti with a formal portrait depicting him in traditional scholarly attire, turban, and dark coat.
