Welcome to Comoros Stamps

Galápagos Penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus)

This stamp is part of the Comorian series on endangered animals and depicts the Galápagos Penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus), the only penguin species naturally found near the Equator. Native to the Galápagos Islands, this rare bird is uniquely adapted to a tropical environment, relying on cool ocean currents that provide the food resources necessary for its survival. Environmental changes and fluctuations in ocean conditions have made the species particularly vulnerable. By issuing this stamp, the Comoros drew attention to the challenges facing endangered species and the importance of international conservation efforts. The issue highlights the extraordinary diversity of life found on isolated islands and promotes awareness of the need to protect vulnerable wildlife and their habitats for future generations.
