The Anjouan Sunbird

Designed by P. Lambert and printed by the Société Ge. Im., this regular postage issue features a detailed ornithological study of the Anjouan Sunbird (Cinnyris comorensis, historically classified as Nectarinia comorensis) in mid-flight against a stylized background of tropical foliage. Historically, this release belongs to a landmark definitive fauna series issued while the Comoro Islands were an overseas territory of France, highlighting the remarkable biodiversity resulting from evolutionary isolation. By profiling this energetic nectar-feeder an endemic species found strictly in the forest canopies, gardens, and coastal plantations of the island of Anjouan the postal administration documented the unique ecological niches of the volcanic archipelago, establishing an important scientific record of the region's localized wildlife.
