John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) and the Apollo Lunar Program

Issued in 1976 as part of the United States Bicentennial (1776-1976) commemorative series, this stamp commemorates President John F. Kennedy and the American space program. The design features Kennedy's portrait alongside a lunar module on the Moon with Earth visible in the background, symbolizing the achievement of the lunar landing program that fulfilled the national objective he announced in 1961. His vision helped inspire the Apollo missions, culminating in the successful landing of humans on the Moon in 1969.
