Allen s Gallinule

This regular definitive issue focuses on the freshwater habitats of the territory by depicting Allen's Gallinule (Porphyrio alleni, historically noted on the stamp as Porphyrula alleni). The composition frames the waterbird wading along a muddy marsh edge flanked by tall reeds and aquatic vegetation, highlighting its long, specialized toes adapted for walking on floating lily pads. Historically, this release archives the presence of localized inland marshes, seasonal lakes, and swamp networks across the islands. By documenting this elusive rail species, the postal system preserved a record of the territory's hidden freshwater biodiversity, which serves as a crucial refuge for migratory and resident wetland birds alike.
