Summer Olympic Games 1976 - Montreal -20 CF

Issued in 1976 as part of a series marking the transition from the 1972 Munich Olympic Games to the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, this stamp commemorates Alajos Szokolyi, one of the medalists of the first modern Olympic Games, held in Athens in 1896. The design depicts a hurdler in competition alongside historical imagery referencing the revival of the Olympic Games and their origins in ancient Greece. Szokolyi won a bronze medal in the 100 metres, becoming one of the early athletes associated with the modern Olympic movement. By issuing this commemorative stamp, the Federal and Islamic Republic of the Comoros honored the history of the Olympic Games and the athletes who helped establish its modern tradition.
