Mountain Nyala (Tragelaphus buxtoni)

Issued in 1976 as part of the Endangered Animals series, this stamp commemorates the Mountain Nyala (Tragelaphus buxtoni), a rare antelope species native to the highlands of Ethiopia. Recognized by its graceful spiral horns and distinctive striped coat, the Mountain Nyala inhabits montane forests and high-altitude grasslands. Because of its restricted range and pressures from hunting and habitat degradation, the species has long been considered one of Africa's most vulnerable large mammals.

By featuring the Mountain Nyala, the Federal and Islamic Republic of the Comoros drew attention to the conservation of rare and threatened species. The issue celebrated the diversity of African wildlife while emphasizing the importance of protecting ecosystems and promoting conservation measures to ensure the survival of endangered animals.
