Eruption of Kathala

In September 1972, Mount Karthala the active shield volcano dominating Grande Comore—experienced a major volcanic eruption characterized by explosive summit activity and significant lava flows within its central caldera. This event served as a stark reminder of the island's dynamic geological origin and ongoing volcanic risk. To document this significant natural occurrence, the postal administration of the Comoros Archipelago issued a 120-franc airmail stamp (POSTE AERIENNE) depicting the fiery glow and plume rising from the caldera during the peak of the eruption.
