Moroni
Moroni, located on the western coast of Grande Comore (Ngazidja), became the official capital of the Comoros Archipelago in 1962. Situated at the foot of the active Mount Karthala volcano, Moroni is renowned for its scenic harbor (The Badjanani), historic medina featuring narrow alleyways, stone houses, and prominent landmarks such as the iconic Badjanani Mosque (Mosquée du Vendredi). The city serves as the economic, political, and cultural heart of the nation.
To highlight regional capitals and major sites across the territory, the postal administration of the Comoros Archipelago (Archipel des Comores) issued a dedicated postage series (POSTES). Designed by P. Lambert, this 50-franc blue-bordered stamp depicts a general panorama of Moroni (Moroni: Vue Générale) on Grande Comore, capturing the coastal waterfront, traditional white stone buildings, the distinctive minaret of the mosque, and the lush slopes of Mount Karthala rising in the background.
