Foumbouni
Foumbouni (Fumbuni), located on the southeastern coast of Grande Comore (Ngazidja), is one of the island's major historical towns. Rich in Swahili-Arab architectural heritage, Foumbouni historically served as a key administrative and trading center for the region. The town is famous for its historic stone arches, public fountains (porte et fontaine), and traditional coral-limestone structures that reflect centuries of coastal Islamic civilization and community water management systems.
To showcase regional architectural and historical landmarks across the islands, the postal administration of the Comoros Archipelago (Archipel des Comores) issued a dedicated postage series (POSTES). Designed by P. Lambert, this 35-franc blue-bordered stamp depicts Foumbouni: Porte et Fontaine on Grande Comore, featuring an ancient stone pillar fountain alongside a traditional arched gateway leading into the historic town settlement.
