Mitsamiouli
The Prophet's Hole, located near Mitsamiouli on the northern coast of Grande Comore (Ngazidja), is one of the island's most legendary natural coastal landmarks. According to local lore, this sheltered bay encircled by rocky basalt cliffs served as a refuge for the Prophet Muhammad or early Islamic leaders fleeing pirates or invaders. The serene, enclosed lagoon and surrounding volcanic rock formations make it a prominent historic and geographic attraction of northern Grande Comore.
To highlight regional historic and natural sites across the territory, the postal administration of the Comoros Archipelago (Archipel des Comores) issued a dedicated postage series (POSTES). Designed by P. Lambert, this 20-franc green-bordered stamp illustrates Mitsamiouli: Le Trou du Prophète on Grande Comore, capturing the sheltered bay, rock outcrops, and a small boat anchored in the tranquil waters.
