The Old Palace at Domoni (Ancien Palais à Domoni), located in the historic coastal city of Domoni on the island of Anjouan (Nzwani), stands as an important symbol of the island's Swahili-Arab royal heritage. Domoni was the historic capital of the Sultanate of Anjouan during the 15th through 18th centuries, serving as a major trading node in the western Indian Ocean. The town's traditional royal palaces feature thick coral-stone architecture, elevated staircases, and carved wooden doorways, reflecting centuries of maritime commerce, regional governance, and Islamic culture.
To showcase historical monuments across the territory, the postal administration of the Comoros Archipelago (Archipel des Comores) issued a dedicated airmail series (POSTE AERIENNE). Designed by P. Lambert, this 40-franc blue-bordered stamp depicts the stone façade and staircase of the Ancien Palais à Domoni on Anjouan, complete with figures in traditional attire (chiromani) in the foreground, celebrating the island's rich historic architecture.
