The Salt Lake of Grande Comore

Based on an original painting by the renowned French maritime artist Roger Chapelet, this issue captures a striking aerial view of Le Lac Salé (the Salt Lake), a deep, circular volcanic crater lake situated near Bangoua Kouni on the northernmost tip of Grande Comore. The landscape vignette documents the steep, densely vegetated inner walls of the caldera sloping sharply down to the enclosed saltwater basin, set against a background where a sandy coastal spit separates the crater from the open swells of the Indian Ocean.
